SARAH BARTHEL TOUR LIFE STYLE

Four years ago, I met the talented music duo that was Phantogram. Not only was I a fan of their music, I knew the would go on to achieve great things, and I was not wrong. This year Phantogram has released their 2nd LP "VOICES" (click here to get the album), and it does not disappoint.

Sarah Barthel is a powerhouse and her style is one that reflects her personal style with a Rock n Roll flare. We love mixing easy wearable pieces with fun accessories and jewelry to give it personality. Brands and Designers like ALLSAINTS, The Blonds, The Laundry Room, Hudson Jeans, and Deepa Gurnani are some of our "go to's" when it comes to fit and style when on tour. Check out some of Sarah's looks while on tour.

SPRING COUTURE 2014 - BEST PICKS

Spring couture 2014 is full of some exciting, adventurous collections from the best designers out there. We've picked some of our favourites so far and first is Valentino's stunning collection. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierepaolo Piccioli have impressed people everywhere with these clothes, with ballerina dresses and more muted, simple designs. It looks like the duo has been inspired a lot by scenery painters, with Piccioli saying "The artisanal tradition strongly relates to the basis of what we do in couture." As the designers absorbed things from their trips to Rome, especially when visiting the opera, they drew inspiration from hand-painted canvases and production design, bringing a new level of sophistication and innovative ideas to the catwalk.

Karl Lagerfeld surprises us all with his Chanel collection, with another stunning set capturing everyone's attention. This set is white and a lovely metaphor for lightness and elegance. Talking about his idea for the clothes, Karl explained he wanted it to be feminine but very boyish. He said "no stiletto, no platforms, no Louboutins!" The clothes were modern and there was a vibrant, playful feel to it as the models ran/skipped/hopped down the staircase. The theme of freedom and being liberated ran throughout the show, even in the darker evening dresses, which oozed elegance and divinity. Colours used were predominantly pales, with a sprinkle of pastels and some metallics incorporated in the outfits, ensuring each element of the show blends well to create a chic look and "a different attitude," in the words of Mr Lagerfeld.

Versace... WOW. Never one to be afraid to try new things or experiment with bold colors and designs, Donatella used daring cuts and riveting hoods on some of her pieces. With singer Lady Gaga (also the star of Versace's advertising campaign) sitting front row as her song 'Donatella' playing, the models began to walk down the runway. Donatella is known for welcoming rock/pop stars into the brand and this season, Grace Jones was a huge inspiration, with the hoods and sensational corsets. Of course, this wouldn't be a Versace show without bright colours, glitter, glitz and furs, so expect to be dazzled when you see the full runway pictures.

Jean Paul Gaultier is the next collection we felt needed to be one of our favourite picks. "Life is a butterfly! So all the collection is that!" are the words of Jean Paul Gaultier, who showcased his stunning line of couture pieces. The ideas were all innovative and brought a delightful touch of nature to the runway, as the chic ladies were then transformed into "showgirls", wearing burlesque style outfits and brilliant corsets. The idea of growth and transformation was prominent throughout and Gaultier never strayed from the theme of butterflies, ensuring there was an element of them in each of his outfits. Silk, mesh and leather were key materials used in this glittering, unique collection that is definitely going to be talked about and admired for years to come.

The final collection is Armani Prive. While we were amazed by all of the Spring Couture 2014, this was another one that was beyond beautiful, with two clear themes running through every look: black and white movies, and his love for Asian culture. These are two themes we know Giorgio Armani is passionate about, as seen in some of his earlier collections. Now, he uses Indian shawls and sari fabrics in a variety of patterns and styles to bring a modern feel to classic looks. All the models had their heads wrapped in scarfs as they walked down the runway, which was a nice touch to each outfit. His evening selection was particularly jaw-dropping, and we can definitely see where he's drawn inspiration from old black and white movies, with no shortage of glitter and sparkles.

MAD FOR PLAID

This season don't be afraid to experiment with our favorite tartan pattern, PLAID!!! Usually associated with Scotland and Scottish kilts, this pattern has definitely evolved since its checkered wool twill debut in the 1700's. Synonymous with the punk and grunge fashion seen in the 80's and 90's, plaid continues to be a staple in most fashion maven's closets. It is used in a variety of fabrications and even created using nail polish these days. Whatever your preference get your plaid on ladies and gents!

LAYERING FOR FALL!

Winter is just around the corner and soon, it'll be time to put away all our gorgeous summer and fall pieces. We need to get ready to pull out our layers and prepare for the cold weather ahead!

There are two layering options we can choose from, depending on what your individual style is. First, there's simple layering. This is basic, effortless layering and is for people who prefer to go for casual everyday wear.

Here's an example! A variety of simple layering looks, where you can pair some boots with skinny jeans, with scarfs and heavy knitted cardigans for a complete look. Stunning neutral coloured scarfs are perfect for layering and make the perfect addition to any outfit.

The alternative option is daring to layer like a fashionista! This is for avid fashion girls, who are constantly reading Vogue and Elle, trying to predict the next trends and spot the hottest pieces. Layering means you'll mix a variety of textures and prints, and use bold colors to make a big statement.

As you can see from above, patterns are huge and every outfit has a daring, risky piece or pattern used! A long maxi skirt is paired with a blazer and bright colours and floral prints are predominant. This is definitely where you can make a statement and these different looks show you how you can mix a variety of pieces to create a gorgeous layered outfit!

HOW HAS THE 90'S INFLUENCED FASHION TODAY?

There's absolutely no doubt that the 90's had an incredible influence on today's fashion. Let's look at some of the things we took from that era and see where they've made a comeback in modern fashion today...

THEN: Thinking back, we remember crop tops, sporty apparel, tartan mini skirts and knee high socks to name a few. I personally think of the movies such as 'Empire Records', 'Clueless', and 'Singles' when I think about iconic 90's style, when plaid skirts, knit vests and button-down shirts were huge! There's no doubt that almost every female who watched the film "Clueless' and has spotted something Cher was wearing and thought "wow, that is the perfect addition to my wardrobe, where can I get one of those?"

TV shows like 'Sabrina The Teenage Witch' and 'Saved By The Bell' both rocked the preppy style, the mini skirts and crop tops an awful lot too and of course denim, denim, denim! These are all things we have brought with us into today's fashion. Kelly Kapowski is often named of the most memorable characters  from the 90's because of her quirky sense of style and ability to make colourful, clashing prints look insanely desirable. Here, we see the character's A.C Slater and Screech in abstract print and Kelly Kapowski in two of the big 90's trends: floral AND a crop top.

Here's a key look from the 90's, the preppy look. Tartan mini skirts and knee high socks is one of the most famous trends from that time period. We all remember the girls of 'Clueless' strutting along in the film, wearing their short denim's and cute socks? Following this in 1998 was the release of Britney's 'Hit Me Baby One More Time', where the video came out and solidified that the sexy school girl style was definitely a successful look.

From this, we can see that music was a significant influence, with people taking on board what their favorite artist was wearing in the latest music video or what new trends seemed to be blowing up. People like Kurt Cobain and Will Smith became famous for their out-going style, wearing plaid and printed jackets. Hip hops musicians proved to be a big inspiration and the baggy jeans, colorful jackets and Tommy Hilfiger blew up in the 90's.

So, what's happened since then? Do we still look at fashion from that period and take things from it, proud to say we still cite Cher as one of our favourite fashion icons? Of course! Here are some pieces and styles from 90's fashion that has made a big standing in modern day style. Some have slight variations and changes, while others have tried to stay as true as possible to the original look.

NOW: Here are some modern day versions of plaid pieces, taken from the 90's. Gwen Stefani was undoubtedly one of the most notable celebrities in that period, always wearing her signature red lip stick and crop tops. Since then, her taste has evolved and changed, but she still has a retro inspired, eccentric taste in clothing, as we can see in the first picture above.

Vanessa Hudgens looks the most 90's inspired in the above image, looking slouchy and wearing an item of plaid, sticking to the true 90's look. Tartan is making an epic comeback, with the red and black classic featured in countless editorials and worn by celebrities all across the globe.

Stars like Rita Ora have drawn a lot from 90's fashion, with the 'Grunge' look proving to be back in style, especially in the upcoming season. Probably one of the most significant stars known for her style, Rita wears bright colours, clashing prints, plaid and tartan, crop tops and lots of denim, which is the perfect recipe for a 90's inspired outfit.

(Via Fashion.IE)

Floral pants have returned since the 'Saved By The Bell' days with celebrities like Rihanna and Olivia Palermo rocking them. To successfully complete the 90's look, Rihanna pairs them with a denim cropped shirt. It's pretty clear that TV shows were relevant to showcasing new trends and making sure the right outfit was put on the right girl. This ensured that the look was appealing to the audience, because seeing someone like Kelly from 'Saved By The Bell' or Rachel from 'Friends' wearing these pieces, made the women at home confident that it was something they too could wear.

(Via TheFashionTag)

The 2013 film 'The To Do List' is set in 1993 and it's a refreshing reminder of why we love 90's fashion so much, especially on the big screen. Crop tops, floral dresses and mini skirts are all the range in this film. It takes us back to one of our favourite era's for fashion and reminds us just why we love pretending we're Kelly Kapowski when we slip into pink denim jackets and bralets.

(Via FabSugar)

Overall, the 90's was a great era and a pivotal time for the evolution of fashion. Many classic pieces of clothing became popularized and part of modern day style during this time and these outfits became so significant. Now we always find ourselves drawing inspiration from films, celebrities and music videos from that era to bring back a touch of the 90's.
